For the first Poster Monday spot december we are featuring a poster from Tomaso Marcolla. He is graduated from the Art Institute of Trento (Italy) and started working as a graphic designer in 1985. “The first cartoons dates to the ‘90s and they were realized with traditional techniques, namely watercolor, pen, collage. My first poster, already rewarded in a competition, was called “Peace talks”, it dates to 1999 and it was realized with pen on paper.
Afterwards the technique evolved with the diffusion of “digital”. The technique of realization changes, but the inspiration always comes out in the same way: a piece of news, a social problem, an event which impressed me particularly. Successively, I try to reproduce it through my art with the aim to intrigue and to stimulate reflection. I even choose to represent tragic events, but never violently”.
About the Christmas 2020 poster Tomaso tells us: “Our life has been conditioned by the spread of Covid-19 for many months now. We got used to see graphs, which show the progress of infection and we always hope to see it decreases. There is one graph which became the symbol of the Corona virus pandemic, it is called “flatten the curve”. It demonstrates, in a simple and intuitive way, the importance to slow down as much as possible the spread of an epidemic, so that the health system can assist all patients preventing the collapse.
For Christmas I created the shape of a Christmas tree, which reminds a graph, whose line, after having reached the peak (symbolizing the star), goes finally down. This image reflects what we all are hoping for: the decrease of infection cases”.
The topics of my art works are the values which characterized my daily life, such as the solidarity, the non-violence and the environmental protection, which I try to represent in an original way, in order to stimulate curiosity, reflection and thinking, always with a connection to the present.
